Although it may not seem like it, October is actually a fantastic month to visit Norway. You won't have to deal with the intense cold of winter, nor will you have to deal with the huge number of tourists that flock to the country in summer. October is in the middle of the season, with cool and crisp weather and mellow autumnal hues on the leaves, ideal for taking stunning photos or traversing the numerous trails you'll find.
Many consider this to be the quietest and most economical month for a holiday. So if you're planning to travel to Norway, this is a great time to do it. Whether you're travelling with family or friends, there is something for everyone. Plus, you'll be able to enjoy Halloween in style!
Ready for an adventure? Here's what you can do in Norway in October.
Visiting the biggest amusement park in Norway is a great plan for any day of the year. However, going to TusenFryd in October is ideal, as it is the Halloween season.
Halloween at TusenFryd is a special occasion and, for that reason, the fun will always be doubled during this season. This is because the park lets loose the monsters from the horror attractions in what is called "Monsterslipp" where only the boldest dare to watch. In addition, the area is decorated with a spooky theme and you can even dress in costume if you wish.
However, if you’re not a horror buff or if you are with small children who might get frightened, you can enjoy the rest of the park as normal. Here, you will find more than 30 fun rides, restaurants serving a wide variety of food, and several souvenir shops to take home a memento of a fantastic day out.
This park is suitable for the whole family, regardless of age, so it's a great autumntime activity that's worth adding to your itinerary.
You may have heard of Jotunheim, as in many movies and video games it is referred to as the "world of giants". And so it is. In Norse mythology, Jotunheim is the realm of the hulking jotnar, and once you get to the park you'll understand why giants loom so large in Scandinavian legends.
Here, in addition to beautiful trails, you will find approximately 250 imposing mountains reaching 2000 metres or more. This incredible spectacle is hard to find anywhere else but Norway. Here, you can relax in beautiful meadows, or walk, cycle, hike, climb or trek along the ridges of some of the mountains. The view is unsurpassed, the air is pristine and the experience and memories you will take home with you will be completely unique.
If you want something to make your visit even more special, it is possible to hire guides for rafting or horseback riding. This way, you can enjoy the view in an entirely different way. In some places in Jotunheim Park it is possible to camp. However, accommodation is also available in the park’s vicinity. In case you want to make it a day trip, the park is located right in the epicentre of the three most important cities of the country: Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.
Its snow is one of the best things about Norway and, like summer, the country's winter season also attracts many tourists. However, in October you can also enjoy the snow without having to worry about the crowds. All you have to do is go to Tromsø and, once there, head to the Lyngen Alps.
There is always snow in this area, no matter the month, so you can experience an iconic Norwegian winter in the middle of autumn. You can admire the spectacular view, play in the snow, go climbing and, if you wish, you can participate in popular winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. It is possible to hire expert guides and instructors, so you can have worry-free fun on one of the most beautiful mountains in the whole country.
In addition, on some nights it will be possible to see the famed Northern Lights from here. If the conditions are right, these mystical lights will illuminate the northern Norwegian sky and you should be able to see them from your accommodation in Tromsø.
It's worth mentioning that the journey from Oslo to Tromsø is lengthy. Therefore, if you’re only planning to visit Norway for a few days you’ll need to plan your journey carefully if you wish to see both regions.
As you can see, October is a perfect month to travel and enjoy this Nordic country full of beautiful scenery and diverse sites. The only thing to keep in mind is to plan your time and budget in advance so you can simply relax and take in the many attractions Norway has to offer.
